Dear Friends, Family and both former and current members of 12 Sqn :-
It was brought to our attention that 12 Sqn does not have its own memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum despite being 110 years old with many battle and campaign honours.
The circumstances of this notification were both quite sad and also uplifting and motivating. Peter Green got in touch via the RAF Charitable Trust. His father Sqn Leader Ken Green DFC served on 12 Sqn at Wickenby flying Lancasters in WWII prior to a lengthy career in the RAF. Sadly, Peter died at the end of March 2021 - in a tribute to his father and former Sqn members he has left us a legacy in his will, his brother David has also pledged his financial support.
Phase 1 – to date
We have raised just over £18,000 from legacies and donations.
NMA Memorials are not cheap, and a sensible budget based on previous Sqns’ and units’ installations would be circa £30K for a Wing Tip style (two information panels) to £45K for a Pyramid style (four information panels).
Phase 2 – April 24 to September 2025
We need to raise a further £12K in order to get to our Wing Tip style. There will be a number of RAF internal fund-raising activities during this period, and we are seeking further donations through this GoFundMe page.
We hope you will agree that it would be good to produce a memorial fitting for a great Sqn, with a long and distinguished history that honours all who have served with 12 Sqn. This requires effort and funds but we hope will leave more than just a legacy of stone but to bring the wider 12 Sqn family together.
Inauguration - 2026
Once we have reached our fund-raising target we can finalise our design, commission stone masons and pay the NMA fees. Our plan is to inaugurate in 2026 following our 2025 110th year events.
Thank you in anticipation of your donation.
